TradingView Price Data and Chart Settings: Why Prices and Daily Bars Differ

A TradingView chart, broker screen and news quote can disagree without one being obviously defective. The instrument, venue or data provider, live-versus-delayed status, session, timezone, corporate-action adjustment, futures contract and price scale can all change the display. This guide isolates one layer at a time, aligns definitions and preserves enough evidence to support a decision or a precise provider inquiry.

DIRECT ANSWER

Diagnose whether the subject, timestamp and transformation are the same

TradingView prices usually differ because the compared instrument, data source, timestamp, session, bar construction, adjustment or display transformation is not identical. Place the full symbol, venue or provider, quote currency, asset type and timestamp from both screens beside one another. A difference without its compared objects is not reproducible evidence.

Do not change several settings at once. Duplicate the original view and align instrument, data, time, adjustment and scale in that order, retaining the residual after each change. In a broker-connected view, the chart, bid/ask order ticket and executable quote may represent different price fields. Preserve which setting resolved the gap so the same mismatch is not rediscovered later.

01 · SYMBOL & SOURCE

Compare a complete market identifier, not a ticker fragment

Search can return similar names across listings, indices, ETFs, futures and CFDs. A dated future and continuous series have different histories. Forex and crypto venues build prices and volume from different activity. For each side, record the formal name, asset type, venue or provider, quote currency, contract month and price field.

Names are fictional. Read the actual symbol description and provider specification.

Data entitlement is part of source identity. A quote visible without an exchange subscription may be official exchange data, an alternative feed or delayed data, subject to current product and market rules. Check the displayed data status and the broker or exchange agreement instead of assuming that every TradingView screen uses the same feed.

02 · SESSION & TIME

Separate session coverage from timezone display

A session determines which trading hours can enter a bar; a timezone determines the clock used to label time. Equities distinguish regular and extended hours, electronic futures can cross calendar dates, and near-24-hour forex or crypto still has provider-specific day boundaries. Changing the displayed timezone does not create trades. Changing session coverage can change the included observations.

If daily bars still differ after the clocks align, inspect the session template, holidays, settlement or last-price convention and provider aggregation. 03 · SCALE & ADJUSTMENTS

Do not confuse historical adjustment with visual scaling

A stock split changes per-share price and shares, while dividend-adjustment choices can change the historical series. A continuous future joins contracts, so roll timing and back adjustment can diverge from an individual expiry. Two charts may have similar latest prices yet different historical highs, returns and indicator inputs. Use the corporate-actions guide to understand the event behind a stock adjustment.

A linear scale assigns equal vertical distance to equal price changes. A logarithmic scale gives equal proportional changes similar distance: 100 to 110 and 1,000 to 1,100 are both 10%. Scaling does not rewrite the observed prices, but it changes perceived slope and distance. Preserve auto or manual range, percentage or indexed transformations and the selected baseline.

04 · DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE

Align one field at a time and retain value, percentage and time

Capture screens A and B at the same instant, then record each value, the arithmetic difference and the difference relative to A. Align the complete symbol and price field and refresh. If unresolved, inspect data status, session, timezone, interval, adjustment and scale sequentially. Create a new log row after every change. For support, redact account details and provide the timestamp and reproduction steps.

FICTIONAL EXAMPLE

Resolve a 14-hour offset and a separate session difference

Fictional screen A shows 14:30 at UTC−5 while screen B shows 04:30 the following day at UTC+9. These are the same instant because (+9)−(−5)=14 hours. If A includes only regular trading and B includes extended activity, daily high and volume can still differ. If A shows last while B shows midpoint, the current price can also differ. Clock, session and price field are three separate controls.

If a 0.20 difference remains, confirm identical timestamps and whether one feed is delayed or stale. A dealer or CFD provider may use a distinct pricing method; reconcile spread, reference and hours with the CFD pricing and execution checklist. An explained source difference can be the correct conclusion; not every legitimate series should be forced to zero.

Build a reusable comparison template

Turn the diagnosis into a data-quality template. Include full symbol, asset type, venue or provider, price field, currency and unit, data status, timestamp, session, timezone, interval, bar state, adjustment, scale, difference, percentage and source. An application version and setting-change date can help explain later interface changes.

  1. Fix the object

    Align formal name, asset type, venue or provider, contract and quote currency.

  2. Fix the instant

    Retain same-time timestamps and live or delayed status.

  3. Fix the bar

    Align session, timezone, interval, bar status and price field.

  4. Fix transformations

    Record corporate actions, roll, currency and linear or logarithmic scale.

  5. Reproduce sequentially

    Recalculate the residual after each change and contact the source when necessary.

After resolution, update the correct symbol identifier in layout names, watchlists, alert messages and research records. Check whether old images or alerts still refer to the earlier source. One incident can then improve data quality across charts, screeners and notifications instead of remaining an isolated troubleshooting note.

Enter 14.5 for 14:30. The minute field is an audit note; the formula uses the decimal-hour field. Check the calendar date, daylight saving, and half- or quarter-hour offsets.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the TradingView price different from my broker?

The instrument, venue or provider, bid/ask/last field, delay, session, currency or timestamp may differ. Align the full symbol and same-time price field before measuring the gap.

Does changing the timezone change the price?

Changing the displayed clock normally does not add or remove trades, but it changes labels and perceived bar boundaries. Treat it separately from session or aggregation changes.

Is a logarithmic chart more correct than a linear chart?

Both display the same price observations on different axes. Linear emphasizes absolute differences; logarithmic can clarify proportional change over wide ranges. Record the selected scale.

Why can historical stock prices change from an older screenshot?

Split or dividend adjustments, symbol changes, data revisions, provider changes and futures-roll settings can alter a historical series. Reconcile the old symbol, timestamp and adjustment setting.
