Trade Cost Calculator Guide
Estimate the round-trip cost and break-even that spread alone cannot show
The Trade Cost Calculator uses the direction, entry price, lots or quantity, pip/point value, spread, commission, swap or funding, holding days and conversion rate you enter to estimate one-way and round-trip cost, break-even pips/points and price, and cost as a share of a target move. Free works without login; Pro adds no-save analysis within the current session; Premium adds local saving, ledgers and reports.
- Core calculations are freeCheck one condition, its break-even and a basic swap-income estimate without logging in.
- Local-firstCalculation inputs and report contents are not sent to or stored on SG Group’s servers; they remain on your device or in files you manage.
- Estimation, not adviceThe calculator does not provide recommended lots, margin, trading decisions, broker rankings or return guarantees.
About the Trade Cost Calculator
The cost of a trade is not determined by the quoted spread alone. Aligning commission, swap or funding while a position is held, and any conversion from cost currency to account currency makes the required move easier to compare. This calculator mechanically organises the conditions you enter and shows an estimated pre-trade all-in cost and break-even.
- Intended users
- FX and CFD traders estimating friction before entry, users reviewing swap or funding by holding period, and individuals or teams comparing and recording several cost assumptions.
- Instrument examples
- FX, gold, index CFDs, commodity CFDs and crypto CFDs. Compatibility depends on entering the quantity, pip/point value, price increment and conversion direction correctly.
- What it calculates
- It aligns spread, commission and swap/funding in the account currency, then estimates one-way and round-trip cost, break-even move and price, cost ratio and period swap cash flows.
- What it does not calculate
- Recommended position size, acceptable loss, required margin, margin level, stop-out, effective leverage, win rate, trading signals or broker rankings.
Use the FX & CFD Lot Size Calculator to derive quantity from risk and margin. Use this calculator after deciding the quantity, when you need its cost and break-even.
What You Can Estimate
Put spread and commission into money terms
- Convert spread to account currency from pip/point value
- Distinguish one-way, round-trip, per-lot and fixed commission modes
- Review one-way cost, round-trip cost and component breakdowns
- Apply a manual conversion when the commission currency differs
See how far price must move to recover cost
- Break-even pips/points and long/short break-even price
- P/L per pip or point for the whole position
- Cost ratio and effective move against a target
- A relative Friction Score for the entered conditions
Estimate swap or funding by period
- Daily, weekly, 30-day, 90-day and 365-day core estimates (Free)
- Cash flows that reflect holding days and triple-day rollover (Free)
- Reference recovery days, target gaps and adverse-move offset (Pro Swap Income Lab)
- 25%, 50% reduction and zero-rate scenarios (Pro Swap Income Lab)
Results freeze the assumptions you enter. They do not automatically capture every variable spread, fill, slippage, minimum commission, tax, holiday adjustment or market gap.
Inputs
Prepare values from the broker’s or venue’s official fee schedule, contract specification, account terms and swap or funding calendar. Presets are input aids, not a maintained source of current broker contract terms.
| Input group | Fields | What to enter | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instrument | Optional symbol, asset class and preset | For example USDJPY, FX, gold or an index CFD | The symbol helps organisation; replace every preset with your own terms. |
| Trade | Direction and entry price | Buy or sell and the price used as the estimate base | Break-even price adds the required move for a buy and subtracts it for a sell. |
| Quantity | Lots or quantity | The amount you are actually considering | The calculator does not derive a recommended position size. |
| Price unit | Pip/point value per lot and pip/point size | Money gained or lost for one unit and the corresponding price increment | These vary by instrument, contract size and account currency. |
| Spread | Spread in pips or points | The condition observed for the estimate | Spread can widen by time of day and market conditions. |
| Commission | Commission mode and amount or rate | The available no-fee, one-way, round-trip, per-lot or fixed mode | Do not confuse per-side and round-turn charging, minimums or fee currency. |
| Currency | Account currency, cost currency and conversion rate | A manual cost-currency-to-account-currency rate | No rate is fetched automatically; the current screen treats a blank rate as 1. |
| Target | Target move or target price | The denominator for the cost ratio and effective move | Optional. Enter either a target move or a target price, not both. |
| Holding | Daily swap, daily funding, holding days and triple-day count | Daily amount per lot and the estimated period | On the trade-cost tab, enter a charge as positive and a credit as negative. |
If an input label or unit changes, follow the live calculator and the current plans page.
Calculation Results
| Result | What it describes | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| One-way and round-trip cost | Estimated burden for one side or for opening through closing | Confirm the commission mode and charge count first. |
| Component breakdown | Spread, commission and swap/funding converted to money | Check that every item uses the same account currency and is not counted twice. |
| Break-even pips or points | Favourable move needed to recover the estimated all-in cost | It is not a forecast that price will make that move. |
| Break-even price | The required move applied to entry for a long or short | It does not guarantee a fill at that price or any profit. |
| P/L per pip or point | Estimated money change when the whole position moves one unit | It changes with contract size, quantity and currency conversion. |
| Cost ratio | Estimated all-in cost as a share of target gross P/L | The same cost becomes a larger percentage when the target move is shorter. |
| Friction Score | A tool-specific relative display of cost burden for the entered conditions | It is not a trading signal or a universal pass/fail score. |
| Period swap | Daily, weekly, 30-day, 90-day or 365-day swap cash-flow estimates | They assume the daily rate persists and can change with rollover and holidays. |
| Recovery and offset references (Pro) | Days for a swap credit to reach trading cost or an assumed adverse move | Part of the Pro Swap Income Lab; these use strong assumptions that price stops moving and the credit persists. |
The exact internal formulas, bands and thresholds for the Friction Score and Pro efficiency score are not publicly specified. Do not invent a pass mark; read it with the cost breakdown, break-even move and cost ratio.
How to Use the Calculator
- Collect official terms.Use the broker’s contract specification, fee schedule and swap/funding calendar to confirm unit size, pip/point value, spread, commission and daily amount.
- Choose the right tab.Use Trade Cost for all-in break-even and Swap Income Check for period cash-flow estimates.
- Enter the trade and quantity.Add the symbol, asset class, direction, entry and actual lots or quantity you are considering.
- Align units and currencies.Confirm pip/point value and size, commission mode, account currency, cost currency and conversion direction.
- Add target and holding assumptions. If relevant, enter a target move or price, daily swap/funding, holding days and triple-day count.
- Read from all-in cost outward.Review the component breakdown, round-trip cost, break-even pips/price and cost ratio, then look for a missing item or double count.
- Recalculate when terms move.Refresh the inputs whenever spread, commission, swap, conversion rate, quantity or holding period changes. Use Pro for in-session comparison and Premium for local saving and ledgers.
Before calculating
Write out one-way versus round-trip, per-side versus round-turn, the definition of one lot, and the cost-to-account-currency direction.
While entering values
Replace preset aids with official terms. On the trade-cost tab, a swap charge is positive and a credit is negative.
After calculating
Record rounding, omitted costs, observation time and source; after execution, keep estimated and realised figures separate.
How Spread, Commission and Swap Are Calculated
The formulas below explain the general method. The live calculator applies the selected commission mode, quantity, currencies, rounding and triple-day settings. The central task is to align every component to one account currency and one consistent one-way or round-trip basis before adding it.
- Pip or point value for the position
pip/point value per lot × lots or quantity. If P/L currency differs from account currency, convert it in the stated direction.- Spread cost
spread × position pip/point value. Confirm whether the displayed spread is already treated once as a round-trip burden; do not automatically double it.- Commission cost
fee unit × quantity × number of charges. Per-side per-lot is commonly charged twice; round-turn per-lot once. Fixed, notional-percentage and minimum fees require their own terms.- Charge-equivalent days
- When regular and triple days are separate:
regular days + 3 × triple-day count. If holding days already include the triple day itself, the equivalent expression isholding days + 2 × triple-day count. - Swap or funding cost
daily amount × quantity × charge-equivalent days. On the trade-cost tab, add a charge as positive and a credit as negative.- Estimated round-trip all-in cost
spread cost + round-trip commission + swap/funding cost. Set inapplicable components to zero and convert foreign-currency costs before adding them.- Break-even move and price
break-even move = all-in cost ÷ position pip/point value, thenbreak-even price = entry ± break-even move × pip/point size. Add for a buy and subtract for a sell.- Cost ratio and estimated net
target gross = target move × pip/point value,cost ratio = all-in cost ÷ target gross × 100, andestimated net = gross − all-in cost.
Triple-day weekday and multiplier, weekend and holiday treatment, a 360- or 365-day basis, and one-way or round-trip charge counts are not universal. Follow the current terms for your broker, instrument and account.
See the guides to converting spread to money, commission modes, swap and funding, and break-even and cost ratio for the detailed reasoning.
Worked Example
The figures below are fictional educational data that demonstrate the calculation flow. They are not a real price, contract specification, commission, swap or broker condition. The example follows the trade-cost-tab convention and treats a swap charge as a positive cost.
| Item | Input | Assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Direction and entry | Buy at 150.000 | The same entry is used as the short comparison base |
| Quantity | 1.0 lot | One pip for the position is JPY 1,000 |
| Pip size | 0.01 | Educational JPY-pair convention |
| Spread | 0.8 pips | Counted once in this round-trip estimate |
| Commission | JPY 500 | Entered as the round-trip total |
| Swap charge | JPY 50/day × 3 days | No triple day; a charge is entered as positive |
| Target move | 10 pips | Denominator for cost ratio and estimated net |
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Spread cost | 0.8 × 1,000 | JPY 800 |
| Holding cost | 50 × 3 | JPY 150 |
| Round-trip all-in cost | 800 + 500 + 150 | JPY 1,450 |
| Break-even move | 1,450 ÷ 1,000 | 1.45 pips |
| Long break-even price | 150.000 + 1.45 × 0.01 | 150.0145 |
| Short comparison | 150.000 − 1.45 × 0.01 | 149.9855 |
| Target gross | 10 × 1,000 | JPY 10,000 |
| Cost ratio | 1,450 ÷ 10,000 × 100 | 14.50% |
| Estimated net at target | 10,000 − 1,450 | JPY 8,550 |
In this example, the long must move 1.45 pips in the favourable direction before the entered spread, commission and three-day swap charge are estimated to be recovered. Cost is 14.50% of the 10-pip target gross amount.
Slippage, tax, deposit or withdrawal charges, platform fees, dividend adjustments, rollover and currency-conversion differences are excluded. Display rounding and actual execution can change the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the calculator for free?
Yes. Free works without login and includes a single-condition trade-cost estimate, break-even, basic swap-income checks and sharing. Follow the current plans page for the latest scope.
What does it estimate?
From the direction, price, quantity, pip/point value, spread, commission, swap/funding, holding days and conversion rate you enter, it estimates one-way and round-trip cost, break-even move and price, cost ratio and related outputs.
How is it different from the Lot Size Calculator?
This tool takes the quantity you are considering and estimates its cost. The Lot Size Calculator covers recommended lot, stop-loss amount, required margin and effective leverage.
Which markets and instruments can I use?
Examples include FX, gold, index CFDs, commodity CFDs and crypto CFDs. This is not a promise of complete compatibility with every symbol; you must enter the correct quantity, contract unit, pip/point value, price increment and conversion.
Does it fetch live price, spread or conversion rates?
No. It does not automatically fetch market or broker terms. You enter the spread, swap/funding and conversion rate and recalculate when the conditions change.
Are presets official broker contract specifications?
No. They are input aids. Replace contract size, pip/point value, leverage, commission, swap and every other term with current official information for your broker and account.
Should spread always be doubled for a round trip?
No. A displayed spread is often treated once as the round-trip burden, but definitions vary by instrument and execution model. Check the calculator label and broker explanation so that the same cost is not counted twice.
How do per-side and round-turn commission differ?
Per-side is commonly charged once at entry and once at exit; round-turn states the total for opening through closing. Also confirm per-lot, fixed, notional-percentage, minimum-fee and fee-currency terms.
Which sign should I use for swap or funding?
On the current trade-cost tab, enter a charge as positive and a credit as negative. A separate screen or article may use the natural cash-flow sign, so always follow the label beside the field you are using.
Is triple-day rollover always on the same weekday?
No. It varies by broker, instrument, settlement calendar and holiday. Confirm the current official rollover calendar rather than assuming a universal weekday.
Do break-even pips or price guarantee a profit?
No. They are static estimates of the favourable move needed to recover the entered costs. They do not guarantee that price reaches the level, that an order fills there or that a trade is profitable.
Is the Friction Score a trading signal or pass/fail test?
No. It is a tool-specific relative display for the entered cost conditions. Do not invent an internal formula or universal threshold; read it with all-in cost, break-even and cost ratio.
Does the basic calculation include slippage and tax?
The basic result follows the fields explicitly entered and displayed. Do not assume that slippage, tax, deposit charges, platform fees or gaps are automatically included unless a current input or feature says so.
Can Pro save conditions?
Not under the current plan. Pro is advanced analysis within the current session without saving. Local saving, templates, history, ledgers and CSV/PDF reports are Premium features.
Are calculation inputs sent to SG Group?
Calculation inputs, templates, history and report contents are not sent to or stored on SG Group’s servers. WordPress and Stripe handle the minimum information needed for login, subscription status and billing.
Can SG Group recover a lost Premium workspace passphrase?
No. The passphrase is never sent to SG Group. Store it securely and create local backups before changing devices and at regular intervals.
Is there a prorated refund when I switch or cancel a paid plan?
Under the current policy, switching paid plans creates a new subscription and charge, with no proration, offset or credit for unused time. Cancellation adds no extra charge, and access generally continues to the term end. Check the current terms before subscribing.
Can I compare brokers or account types?
Pro and Premium can compare several user-entered conditions for the same trade. The tool does not rank, endorse or identify a cheapest broker, solicit account opening or give individual trading advice.
