How to Start Forex Trading: Broker Checks, Demo Practice and a 10-Step Safety Review
A safer start in forex does not begin with finding the highest-rated broker, the largest bonus or a promoter’s return screenshot. It begins by identifying the regulator that applies to your residence, checking the firm and its permissions in the regulator’s own record, returning to the genuine website through verified contact details, reading execution and withdrawal terms, and rehearsing operations in a demo before sending money. This guide does not rank or recommend dealers. It defines ten pieces of evidence to collect and the unresolved conditions that should stop the onboarding process.
Who this guide is for: For beginners who discovered a forex platform through search, advertising, social media or a comparison page and need a regulator-first due-diligence sequence.
Key points to understand first
- Check the provider with the regulator for your home jurisdiction and the exact product or permission required.
- Match legal name, registration number, website, phone and address; a copied registration number can belong to a clone.
- Registration is an important minimum check, not a guarantee against loss, fraud, failure or future misconduct.
Complete the evidence before the deposit
- 01Home jurisdiction
Identify the regulator, legal framework and complaint route for your residence.
Official regulator page and access date - 02Legal name and number
Match the legal entity and registration number, not just a trading brand.
Saved register result - 03Product permission
Confirm permission to offer retail forex or the relevant derivative.
Permission and status fields - 04Official contact
Match address, phone, email domain and website with the register.
Contact reached from official record - 05Warnings and history
Search disciplinary, warning, clone and unauthorized-firm records.
Regulator and SRO search results - 06Client assets
Read segregation, insolvency and compensation scope without assuming coverage.
Contract section and jurisdiction - 07Pricing and orders
Identify counterparty, price formation, stop triggers, slippage and outages.
Execution policy - 08Costs and funding
Capture spread, commission, overnight cost, conversion and transfer fees.
Dated fee schedule - 09Withdrawal and support
Review verification, timing, cancellation and official escalation routes.
Withdrawal terms and support log - 10Demo and stop plan
Test orders, cancellation, exports, margin displays and emergency actions.

Build rejection criteria before reading broker rankings
A ranking changes with the publisher’s criteria, commercial relationships, update date and intended customer. Suitability also changes with residence, product, capital, experience and required functions. This article therefore names no “best” dealer. Define disqualifiers first: registration cannot be independently verified, the legal entity is unclear, terms cannot be downloaded, withdrawal rules are missing, or a representative creates urgency around a deposit.
Start with the law and regulator for your residence. A license in another country does not automatically authorize solicitation or service where you live, and a familiar brand can operate through different legal entities in different regions. Use the home regulator’s official domain rather than a badge on the dealer website. If the position is unclear, ask the regulator or qualified legal counsel before providing identity documents or funds.
Verify the firm in your home regulator’s record
A US resident can begin with the CFTC’s registration and background check, which directs users to NFA BASIC for CFTC registration, disciplinary or regulatory history and certain financial information. Search the exact legal name and individuals involved, verify current status and inspect the activities for which the entity is registered. A retail foreign exchange dealer, introducing broker or adviser has a specific regulatory capacity; a name appearing somewhere in a database does not prove permission for every service.
In another country, use the equivalent home regulator. For example, a UK consumer can use the FCA Firm Checker and Financial Services Register to verify authorization and permission. A Japanese resident can use the Financial Services Agency’s registered financial instruments business operator list. These examples are not endorsements of a jurisdiction or firm. They demonstrate the same method: official record first, exact legal entity second, relevant permission third.
| Field | Evidence | Question |
|---|---|---|
| Jurisdiction | Residence and regulator page | Which customer protections and complaint route apply? |
| Entity | Legal name and registration number | Is this the contractual counterparty? |
| Status | Current, inactive, withdrawn or exempt | May it currently provide this service? |
| Permission | Retail forex or relevant derivative | Does the permission cover the offered product? |
| History | Discipline, warnings and financial data | What issues require further review? |
Defend against copied registrations and clone firms
Fraudsters can copy the legal name, address, logo and registration number of a genuine firm. A valid number does not prove that the website, app or person contacting you belongs to that registrant. Compare the domain, telephone, physical address and email with the regulator’s record. Return the call using a number obtained independently from that record, not the number in the advertisement, chat or unsolicited message.
The FCA warns that clone firms can copy genuine details while changing the phone, website or email. Similar tactics can occur anywhere. Stop if the domain differs by one character, communication moves only to a private messaging app, deposits go to a personal account, crypto is the only accepted payment, remote-access software is requested, or withdrawals require an unexpected “tax” or “insurance” payment. Search warning lists, but remember that absence from a warning list is not proof of legitimacy; regulators may not yet know the new name or URL.
| Field | Official record | Advertised contact | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal entity | ABC Financial LLC | ABC Markets | Find the contractual entity |
| Telephone | +1 000 555 1111 | +1 000 555 9999 | Call the official number independently |
| Domain | abc-financial.example | abc-financiaI.example | Stop: look-alike character |
| Deposit | Corporate bank account | Personal wallet only | Do not send funds |
Every name, number and domain is invented.
Read pricing, execution, client-asset and withdrawal terms
After identity verification, download the customer agreement, risk disclosure, execution policy, fee schedule, privacy notice and complaint process. Identify whether the product is OTC or exchange-traded, the legal counterparty, how prices are formed, whether spreads are variable, which price triggers stops, how slippage, rejections and partial fills work, what happens during a platform outage, and the margin close-out process. Save the version and effective date.
Read how client money or assets are held, whether segregation is required, which entity is the custodian, and what insolvency or compensation regime may apply. Do not interpret “segregated” or “protected” as insurance against trading losses, slippage or every failure scenario. Review withdrawal identity checks, permitted destination accounts, currency conversion, fees, normal processing times and closure procedures. Ask questions in writing and preserve the answers.
| Group | Extract | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Trade unit | Minimum size, increment, contract size | Can differ by instrument |
| Leverage | Maximum, margin and change conditions | Maximum is not a recommendation |
| Friction | Spread, commission, funding, conversion | Record date and variability |
| Orders | Trigger, expiration, gap and outage rules | Definitions matter more than labels |
| Client assets | Holding method, insolvency, scope | Not the same as loss insurance |
| Withdrawal | Verification, fees, time and limits | Unexpected extra payment is a warning |
Use demo to test operations, not to prove profit
Demo pricing and execution may not reproduce live liquidity, slippage or spread. Demo profit is therefore not evidence of live profitability. Demo still has a useful operational role: confirm order direction, quantity units, market, limit and stop tickets, modification, cancellation, linked orders, history exports, margin displays, timezone and record retention. Simulate an incorrect order and rehearse how every pending instruction is cancelled.
- Confirm units
Match one lot, minimum size and size increment with the specification.
- Operate every order
Place, amend, cancel and partly close market, limit and stop examples.
- Trace costs
Locate spread, commission, overnight charge and conversion in the records.
- Simulate an outage
Find verified support, identity steps and any phone-order or emergency process.
- Export evidence
Save order IDs, fills, balance, margin and cancellation history.
Decide whether a fabricated candidate is eligible for funding
Assume Candidate X appears in the home regulator’s record and its legal name, number and permission match. The genuine contract can be downloaded from the website reached through that record. However, a social-media representative supplies a different domain and a personal deposit account. The genuine registrant’s existence does not authenticate the representative. Funding remains prohibited until the firm is contacted independently through the official record and the clone concern is resolved.
| Check | Result | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Regulator record | Entity, number and permission match | Minimum check passed |
| Official contact | Social contact does not match | Stop and verify independently |
| Deposit destination | Personal account requested | Do not transfer |
| Contract | Obtained through verified domain | Continue reading only |
| Warning list | No matching warning found | Not proof of safety |
This is not a case study about a real firm.
Even after every identity discrepancy is resolved, there is no reason to begin with a large transfer. Decide in advance what limited amount is required for the operational test and verify deposit records, official support and the documented withdrawal process. A small transfer still carries loss and fraud risk. If withdrawal requires an unexpected advance fee, tax, guarantee deposit or crypto payment, do not send more. Contact the regulator and appropriate law-enforcement or fraud-reporting channel through independently verified details.
Save ten dated checks and do not proceed with an open question
- Identify the home regulator and complaint route.
- Match legal name, number, status and relevant permission.
- Return to the website through independently verified contact details.
- Search regulatory actions, warnings, clone notices and SRO history.
- Read client-asset and insolvency treatment.
- Read pricing, orders, stop triggers, liquidation and outage handling.
- Estimate all costs for the same size and holding period.
- Review withdrawal rules and verified support escalation.
- Rehearse order, cancellation, records and emergency actions in demo.
- Document trading capital, loss budget and no-trade conditions.
After due diligence, use the free Lot Size Calculator to translate verified contract size and leverage into quantity, margin and estimated stop loss. Use the Trade Cost Calculator for spread, commission and overnight cost. These are not broker-selection tools and do not fetch current dealer terms; enter values from the official documents yourself.
The purpose of due diligence is not to certify an absolutely safe broker. It is to avoid giving money or identity data to an unverifiable party under a contract you do not understand.
Frequently asked questions
Does registration mean a forex broker is safe?
Registration is an important minimum check, not a guarantee of profit, honest future conduct, solvency or recovery. Verify permission, identity, disciplinary history, terms, costs, client assets and withdrawals too.
Can I use an offshore license if the firm targets my country?
A foreign license does not automatically authorize service in your residence. Check the home regulator’s official guidance and register, and obtain qualified advice if the legal position is unclear.
Should I trust a best-broker ranking?
Rankings depend on criteria, commercial relationships, date and audience. This guide does not rank firms; it prioritizes independent regulator records and the contract you will actually sign.
Does demo profit mean I am ready to trade live?
No. Demo may not reproduce liquidity, slippage, emotion or withdrawal. Use it to verify controls, units, records and emergency procedures, not future performance.
A platform asks for tax or insurance before releasing my withdrawal. What should I do?
Do not send more money. Contact the genuine firm through regulator-verified details and report the situation to your home regulator and appropriate fraud or law-enforcement channel.
