Grains and Oilseeds Analysis: WASDE, Stocks-to-Use, Acreage and Weather

Weather alone cannot explain grain prices. Acreage, yield, carry-in, feed, biofuel, exports, currency and logistics determine how a crop reaches the balance sheet. WASDE and related releases place supply and uses in a crop-year account. CROP IDENTITY

Build production from area and yield, then connect the balance

Crop production begins with harvested area multiplied by yield. Planted and harvested area differ because of abandonment, forage use and damage. Yield varies across regions, varieties, planting dates, soils, inputs and weather. When production changes, identify whether area or yield moved, the geography, and whether the value is forecast or survey evidence.

Soybeans split into meal and oil; corn serves feed, ethanol and food; wheat classes meet different milling requirements. Decompose use by sector and processing economics. Do not add raw and processed inventories without conversion yields and aligned units.

Read scope, prior revision and evidence before the headline total

USDA WASDE compiles monthly U.S. and world forecasts. Confirm table, commodity, year, unit and footnotes, separating changes from last month and last year. Higher world ending stocks can conceal lower exporter inventories, off-specification quality or policy stocks that do not enter international trade.

Decompose the revision into production, imports, exports, feed, processing, residual and ending stocks. Production and demand reductions can offset. Price response also depends on expectations and concentration, so a WASDE figure is not a directional signal.

BUFFER QUALITY

Separate global, exporter, regional and usable stocks

Stocks-to-use normalizes ending stocks by annual market size. Global totals can include policy reserves or stocks behind transport constraints. Add major-exporter stocks, exportable surplus and port capacity. Wheat class and protein, or quality and contamination in feed grains, affect usability.

A lower use forecast raises the ratio even if stocks are unchanged. The year-end figure does not identify the seasonal minimum. Quarterly stocks, export inspections, crush or ethanol runs and feed indicators fill the path.

CROP WEATHER

Assign weather to growth stage, region and forecast vintage

Heat has different effects at planting, flowering, pollination, grain fill and harvest. Rain can relieve drought or create flooding, fieldwork delay and disease. A national average loses distribution across major producing areas, soil moisture, evapotranspiration and night temperature. Use production weights and a crop calendar.

Forecasts change by model, issue time and horizon. Preserve the forecast that was available at the decision time. Compare Crop Progress planting, emergence, condition and harvest with normal pace, but test the relationship between condition and final yield by year rather than applying a fixed conversion.

TRADE & PROCESSING

Separate export sales, inspections, customs and shipments

An export sale, inspection, customs record and loaded vessel are different stages. Sales can be cancelled and shipments delayed. River levels, rail, ports, bulk freight, currency and tariffs create basis between inland and world prices.

Soybean crush, corn ethanol and wheat milling economics affect raw-material use. Separate product value, co-products, energy and utilization. For exporter competition, align local-currency cash prices to the same delivered quality, currency and date.

Can WASDE alone determine price direction?

No. Expectations, exporter stocks, quality, freight, currencies and information already priced all matter.

Are planted and harvested area the same?

Not necessarily. Abandonment, forage use and weather damage can reduce harvested area.

Is global stocks-to-use enough?

No. Separate major exporters, region, quality, policy stocks and port capacity.

Does a high crop-condition rating guarantee high final yield?

No. The relationship varies with survey timing, geography and year. Test it historically rather than using a fixed conversion.
