Compare two independent measures—a percentile of price-normalized ATR and a fast/slow ATR ratio. The state changes to Compressed, Normal or Expanded only under the published agreement rules.

01 — Overview

Read agreement between two measures, not one ATR value

The indicator separately classifies a percentile rank of ATR divided by price and a fast ATR divided by slow ATR, then holds the displayed regime with hysteresis. It does not forecast direction, reversal or the next range.

What it visualizes

A 0–100 ATR-rank line, compressed and expanded guides, optional regime shading and a table with regime, fast/slow ratio, agreement, persistence and ATR length.

How it works

Both measures must agree on Expanded or Compressed before entering that state. Both must return to their middle bands before Normal is restored. Disagreement holds the prior state.

Price-normalized ATR rank

ATR divided by price is ranked from 0 to 100 inside the selected history window.

Fast/slow ATR ratio

Short-window ATR is compared with its slower baseline to describe recent expansion or compression.

Agreement and persistence

Cross-measure agreement reduces flicker; Persistence counts consecutive bars in the displayed regime.

02 — Install and start

Add it to TradingView

Add the public script to a chart and identify every drawing in the default configuration first. Change only one input at a time.

Volatility Regime Dashboard

Open the public Volatility Regime Dashboard page and add it to a TradingView chart. No SG Group account is required.

  1. Open the “Use on TradingView” link below.
  2. Select “Use on chart” on TradingView to add the script to your chart.
  3. Open the gear icon, then Settings → Inputs, and observe the default configuration first.
  4. Change one input at a time for the symbol and timeframe you are studying.

Prevent misreads when indicators overlap

Overlapping lines, bands, backgrounds or tables can be duplicate drawings of the same kind of information. Never treat visual overlap by itself as stronger evidence or signal agreement. The separate pane reduces price-overlay collisions, but another ATR percentile or regime background can duplicate lines, thresholds and colors and create false visual agreement.

  • Temporarily hide other ATR and percentile plots in the same pane.
  • Use Show regime background in only one study so each shade has a single source.
  • Turn off Show context table or change Table position when another dashboard shares its corner.
  • Two Expanded labels are not independent confirmation when their windows or definitions differ.
03 — How to read it

A practical reading order

Do not turn one value or color into a conclusion. Check the condition, persistence and relationship to price in order.

Check for Warming up

Do not use the classification until the required history is available.

Read both measures separately

Inspect ATR %ile and Fast/Slow ATR and their individual states.

Confirm agreement and age

Use Measures agree and Persistence to distinguish a fresh state from a long-held one.

Status and display terms

Warming up

The required history is not yet available, so no regime is classified.

Compressed

Both measures agree on compression; it does not predict a breakout.

Normal

Both measures are back inside their middle bands.

Expanded

Both measures agree on expansion; no price direction is implied.

Measures agree

Yes or No for agreement on the same non-neutral direction.

Persistence

The number of consecutive bars in the displayed regime.

04 — Settings reference

Settings reference

The labels below match the published script’s English Inputs panel. Defaults reflect the public source at the time of review and may change in a later TradingView update.

On small screens, each input is reformatted as a readable stacked card.

05 — Alerts

Alerts report events, not decisions

Alerts are state, touch or transition events defined in the public source. They are not trade instructions.

  • Volatility regime changed reports a change in the displayed regime.
  • Alert only on bar close defaults to ON so the event uses confirmed bars.
06 — Limitations and responsible use

Not a buy/sell signal

This tool is for analysis and visualization. It is not investment advice, a trade recommendation, a forecast, or a promise of profit or accuracy. Results depend on inputs, symbol, timeframe, and data feed. You remain responsible for every trading decision.

No direction

Expanded does not mean up, and Compressed does not predict a reversal or breakout.

Window dependent

A short rank lookback can be unstable; a long one reacts slowly. Sparse history weakens the rank.

Price-data assumption

ATR divided by close assumes a positive, non-zero price. Defaults are not optimized for a specific market.

Important

A regime is situational context, not a forecast. Evaluate direction, price structure and risk separately.

07 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Clarify the two measures, hysteresis, required history and non-directional meaning.

Is Volatility Regime Dashboard free to use?

Yes. It is a free, open-source indicator published by SG Group on TradingView. Review TradingView’s terms and the conditions attached to the public script before reuse or redistribution.

Should I change the settings immediately?

Start with the published defaults and observe the drawings and state changes first. Then change one input at a time for the symbol, timeframe and data feed so you can identify what caused each visual change.

Can I display it with other indicators?

Yes, but similar lines, bands, backgrounds and tables can overlap and obscure their source. Isolate each indicator first and hide duplicate components. Visual overlap alone is not stronger evidence or signal agreement.

Does the display provide trade signals?

No. It is analysis and visualization context consistent with the public description. It does not provide entries, exits, targets, stops, price forecasts, or promises of profit, win rate or accuracy.

Does Compressed always lead to Expanded?

No. Compressed describes current relative range contraction. It can persist or return to Normal and does not forecast the next direction or range.

Source basis and update policy

This guide is grounded in SG Group’s live catalogue, the script’s published TradingView description, and the user-facing inputs in its open source. Labels and defaults can change after a script update.
